SHARKS AT NEWQUAY ZOO

If you go down to the zoo today you’re sure of a big surprise! Because you will see some real sharks – not basking, but working hard helping the keepers at Newquay Zoo. Every year tree surgeons go to the zoo and cut back the overhanging trees and the branches and logs that have been cut down, are used to make platforms and perches for animal enclosures home to a variety of animals. The logs need to be moved to areas all over the zoo so what better than to ask a team of very strong men to help load and unload. So American Football team the Cornish Sharks are putting their muscle power to good use as part of their “Sharks in the Community Programme” – a programme designed for players to give back to the community in Newquay that supports them.

One particular enclosure that is causing some excitement is being prepared for Yellow Breasted Capuchin Monkeys which will be arriving early spring and some of the logs will be used as climbing frames for the monkeys.

Head Coach of the Sharks, Brian Smallworth said “The Cornish Sharks have a large, loyal base of supporters and fans in Newquay and we are delighted when we have the opportunity to support local community projects. Newquay Zoo is an important part of Newquay and significant to the local economy. It is located just around the corner of the home of the Cornish Sharks, Newquay Sports Centre where the Sharks can be seen training hard every Sunday between 12 noon and 4pm.
